One-on-one yoga and C-IAYT (Certified Yoga Therapist through the International Association of Yoga Therapists) represent different approaches to yoga instruction and application:
One-on-One Yoga:
Focus: Primarily on physical postures (asanas), breathing exercises (pranayama), and sometimes meditation.
Goals: Typically tailored to the individual's needs and preferences, often focusing on improving flexibility, strength, stress reduction, or general well-being.
Instructor: A yoga teacher with a 200-hour or more certification, but not necessarily specialized training in therapeutic applications of yoga.
Session Structure: Typically follows a general format but can be adapted to the individual's abilities and goals.
Benefits: Personalized attention, modifications for specific needs, and a comfortable environment for beginners or those with specific concerns.
C-IAYT (Certified Yoga Therapist):
Focus: On the therapeutic application of yoga for specific health conditions or goals.
Goals: May include pain management, anxiety reduction, stress management, rehabilitation, or improving quality of life for those with chronic illnesses.
Therapist: A highly trained professional with at least 800 hours of additional training in yoga therapy, anatomy, physiology, and the application of yoga to various health conditions.
Session Structure: Highly individualized, involving an initial assessment, development of a personalized yoga therapy plan, and ongoing evaluation and adjustment.
Benefits: Evidence-based approach, specific focus on health conditions, and expertise in adapting yoga practices for individual needs.
Key Differences:
Feature | One-on-One Yoga | C-IAYT |
Focus | General well-being, fitness | Therapeutic application for specific conditions |
Instructor/Therapist | Yoga teacher | Certified Yoga Therapist |
Training | 200+ hours | 1000+ hours (200+ yoga teacher training + 800+ yoga therapy) |
Assessment | Informal, based on client goals | In-depth, including medical history and current needs |
Plan | Flexible, adapted to individual | Specific, goal-oriented with measurable outcomes |
Suitable For | General population, beginners, specific needs | Specific health conditions, chronic illness, rehabilitation |
Choosing the Right Option:
If you're looking for general fitness, stress reduction, or a personalized yoga experience, one-on-one yoga might be suitable.
If you have a specific health condition, chronic pain, or are looking for a more therapeutic approach, a C-IAYT would be a better choice.
